Optical Communications Laboratory

This laboratory is devoted exclusively to teaching. The use of this laboratory permits to the student complementing the theoretical courses that are part of the specialty in communications.

We have several types of lasers, optical systems and electronic equipment that permit to carry out the design and development of experiments in the three windows of optical communication (0.8, 1.3 and 1.5 µm). It is also possible to the characterization of opto-electronic systems at these wavelengths, as well as, characterization of integrated optical devices such as optical waveguides, sensors and photo-detectors.

Here, the students carry out the electronic instrumentation needed for the assembly of optical communication systems for direct modulation, using:

  • Optical sources operating in the wavelengths of 0.8, 1.3 and 1.5 µm.
  • Modulable laser operating at 800 nm.
  • Single-mode and multimode optical fibers.
  • Isolators and optical fiber polarizer.
  • Infrared and visible photo-detectors.
  • Optical power meter.
